Doorways 2 continues to build on the skills and concepts practiced in DW1. DW1 (or the equivalent of Focusing Levels 1&2 with another teacher) are a prerequisite to taking DW2. In this course you’ll continue to grow in your Focusing and Companioning skills - dealing with inner critics, feelings about feelings, recognizing close and distant processes, sensing what a part is not wanting, and more!

Class 1 - The Gentle Holding in Transitions

In this first week we’ll remind ourselves of what we’ve hopefully learned so far - as well as look at some key things about beginnings and endings of a session.

Main Takeaways:
  • A Focusing session can be started in three ways: (1) with an issue, (2) with a presently felt body sensation, (3) coming into the body with an openness to what wants attention
  • One reason the starting place is important is that it opens up the many uses of Focusing: decisions, puzzling repetitive patterns, emotional healing, creativity, etc.
  • Ending the Focusing session is important because it can help with containment and a sense of moving forward in the next most authentic and “right” step toward healing and wholeness.

Class 1 - The Art of Not Asking Questions

Main Skills

  • Knowing the difference between a “reflection” and a “reminder”
  • Being able to add a “cushion” to a reminder
  • Being able to take extra time when feeling something “positive” in the body
  • As Focuser, knowing how to ask for a reminder
Key Concepts
  • A reflection is a statement that mirrors without offering a next step. A reminder is an invitation to take a next step.
  • Adding “cushions” to reminders makes them gentler, and easier for the Focuser to adapt or ignore.
  • In a session where reminders are given, the Focuser is still in charge.
